Three Easy Ways to Welcome Springtime Indoors

Letting that warm springtime feeling inside after a cold winter is one of the best parts of the seasons changing. Welcome the sunshine indoors by refreshing your space. Spring cleaning is more than just dusting—think about starting the new season with a better living room furniture set!

1. Clean

Spring cleaning can become a fun family tradition. Get some music playing, assign tasks, and get the whole family in a cleaning competition!

2. Use Your Green Thumb

Add some plants into your space. Humans are naturally drawn to nature, and adding a vivacious green plant—real or fake—can help bring the budding branches indoors.

3. Furniture Update

Store away heavy blankets and transition into the light, airy feeling of spring. Swap out those dark, heavy curtains with light, sheer ones! If you are considering a new piece of furniture, you will want one that can easily transition through all seasons. The light gray upholstery on this England Furniture Monroe Sectional (pictured) can look chic in any season.

Creating Balance in Interior Design

Redecorating your space can be fun and refreshing–especially with Spring approaching. With so many ideas online, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by pieces that look like they go together, but don’t quite look right in your space. One trick interior designers turn to when laying out a space is a principle of design: balance.

Balance can help you determine where something “goes”. Whether you’ve purchased a new piece of furniture, or you’re just adding in a new lamp, balance can guide your design decisions.

There are three primary types of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial. Symmetrical balance refers to mirroring over a central axis, while asymmetrical has more to do with weight. Radial balance means a room is arranged around a central point to evoke centrifugal motion.

Pictured here is a great example of asymmetrical balance. You can see how the weight of the room is balanced out by a small side table and a tall, skinny lamp. The Malibu sectional’s chaise balances with the other side of the sofa.

The Right TV for Your Living Room

Watching television is a great source of entertainment and is often relaxing. Choosing the right TV size to go with your living room can be, however, anything but entertaining and relaxing!  There are at least four factors you should consider before making a purchase:  room size, the primary intended use of the room, TV resolution, and price.

Room size

While some people always take the “bigger is better” approach, it’s ideal to first consider the size of your living room.   Ultimately, the size of your new television should be is directly proportional to your room size. Small livings rooms should have a smaller TV, and bigger rooms can have a larger TV.  Related to this point is a formula that can help you determine the correct TV size for your space.   The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers recommends the following:

Distance to Viewer (inches) ÷ 1.6 = Diagonal Length of Screen (inches)

Measure the distance between where most people will sit when watching the TV up to the TV itself (don’t include the stand or wall mount, only the TV).  Take that number and divide it by 1.6   The number provided will indicate the diagonal length of the TV you should consider.  Many suggest it’s okay to go a bit bigger, but don’t go to much smaller.

Viewing angles are another important consideration when considering room size.  Ideally, the television should be placed parallel to your eyes, with no more than a 15-degree angle up or down and no more than a 40-degree angle to the left or right.  Consider where your TV will go in relations to the various chairs and seats in your room and plan accordingly.

Room use

Not everyone uses their living room the same way.  Some people live in their living rooms and have the TV on constantly.  Others tend to use it primarily for reading or entertaining with the television typically being off.  Still other people lie somewhere in between.  Before making a new television purchase be honest with yourself regarding how often you intend to use it.  Also make sure your intended television size complements all the other furnishings in your living room.

TV Resolution

Not all HDTVs are the same, but the screen resolution becomes more important as the screen becomes larger.  For an HDTV that is 40 inches or smaller, a 720p resolution may be sufficient.  Once you get to a 50-inch screen or larger, you will start to see a definite difference between 720p and 1080p.  Make sure the television you choose is not only the correct size, but the correct resolution as well.

Price

Finally, the price is an important factor for most people.  Again, the television is only ONE piece in your living room and families need to have a budget for other living room furnishings such as chairs, sofas, end tables, coffee tables, etc.  Rule #1:  Don’t spend your entire budget on a big TV!

Living Room Staging Tip and Tricks

If you are planning to put your house on the market it’s important to understand the basics of staging.  When it comes to staging rooms, and arranging furniture, there are often personalized and subjective choices to be made.  Generally speaking, however, the goal is to highlight your home’s strengths and to downplay its weaknesses.  Doing so will help to appeal to the greatest possible number of prospective buyers.  Consider some of these general guidelines from England Furniture as you begin to stage your living room.

Light it up!
Make sure you have light sources all around the room and that every corner gets attention. Keep light balanced. If, for example, you have end tables on either side of your sofa, have matching lamps on either side.

Pack it up!
Pack up unnecessary furniture (and personal items) before you show the house to prospective buyers. An overpacked living room is a warning sign to buyers that your home lacks storage space. Move furniture to your garage or a storage facility. Many professional stagers prepped for market by taking away almost half of the owner’s furnishings, and the house looks much bigger as a result. You don’t necessarily need to cut that much, but be sure to take some pieces out of the room.

Bring it in!
There’s a common belief that living rooms will appear larger if all of the furniture is up against the walls. This isn’t true! If necessary, furnish your living room by keeping furniture away from walls. Create a cozy, conversational area with your sofa and chairs in the center. Place pieces so that the traffic flow in a room is obvious. Symmetrical arrangements usually work well in a living room.

Use Your Rugs Too!
It’s important to show your living room flooring, but you also want to use large area rugs in the living room. A smaller rug will make a small room seem even smaller. Place the rug underneath at least the first set of legs of your couch or chairs to create a cohesive look. Generally speaking, furniture looks better when all the furniture is on them. Tips for Arranging Your Sectional Sofa

A sectional sofa is extremely comfortable and it can provide ample seating for your family or for entertaining. It’s a large piece of furniture, however, and its’ size can make it difficult to arrange the room in a functional way. Some people are hesitant to buy sectional sofas for this reason, but with a better understanding of furniture placement, you can create a comfortable atmosphere with a sectional that will work in almost any space.

Achieve Balance
Creating a sense of balance is important. Sectional sofas are large and a room can quickly appear to be weighed down on one side. Position your sectional sofa across from other big pieces of furniture, such as a large armchair, a big entertainment stand, a noticeable fireplace, or a big bookcase. While you may be tempted to separate the pieces of your sectional, avoid the temptation. Doing this often throws off a sense of balance and creates an awkward looking room.

Accessibility and Openness
If you have a good amount of square footage, place the longest section of a sectional into the corner that is opposite the entry into your room. This will create a sense of space that will appear easily accessible, inviting, and open. If the sectional sofa includes an armless, interchangeable chaise lounge, keep it away from the entry side. The chaise should be out of the way to avoid tripping. You also want to avoid having to walk around to sit.

Create a Good Sense of Flow
Sectional sofas initially seem awkward to position in your room. Many individuals tend to place large furnishings up against walls, assuming that’s the only option. It isn’t! The middle of the room can often be the perfect place for your sectional as placing it in the middle enables you to use an otherwise open space. It also makes every seat of sectional accessible and the wall space can be used for other pieces of furniture. Try placing your coffee table or the sectional’s footstool in the center of the room and then place your sectional sofa in – and around – the coffee table or stool. Make sure you leave room for accessing each seat and room for the recliner’s footstool.

What to look for in a recliner

Recliners are pieces of motion furniture that are among everyone’s favorite pieces of furniture.  As such, people often pay more attention to the internal parts that make them work than they would with other pieces of furniture. When looking for a recliner, people are going to need to make sure that the motors are quiet enough, or using the recliners will be a noisy and frustrating experience for people to endure on a regular basis.

Shoppers should make sure that the screws of the recliner are heavy enough in order to support all of the changes that they’re going to have to endure when the chair is used. The levers of some recliners are also easier to use than others. Some of them respond more smoothly to touch than others as well. People should really try to imagine them using these recliners each and every day, including when they’re exhausted after a long day at work and when they just want to relax. If they could imagine really using a particular recliner each and every day, they’re going to be that much more likely to make the right decision.

People are shopping for a recliner need cushioning that is full and firm enough, and they’re going to need the headrests and the armrests to provide all of the support that they need. Shorter people should make sure that when the chair is reclined all the way backward they are still able to easily touch the floor with their feet. Otherwise, the chair is going to get uncomfortable quickly when they’re using it every day.

Some people are going to prefer fabric recliners and some people are going to prefer leather recliners. The care requirements for these two materials are going to vary. People who cannot maintain leather surfaces easily should think twice before getting leather recliners.

England Furniture has a great line of England Furniture recliners and there’s something available for everyone!

Plates Are for More Than Just Mealtime

Hanging plates is a design trick you’ve probably seen a million times, but perhaps never registered. They look lovely on a breakfront or your walls. You can choose from your own or go antiquing to find some special plates you’d want to display.

Make Your Own Art!

Frames have an amazing way of turning anything into art. Take some drawings you or your children drew back in grade school – even a letter to Santa or a home-made birthday or holiday card – and put it in a gorgeous frame.

Make Your Own Art! Part 2

Blank canvasses are not very expensive in art supply stores, and you can either paint them yourself with your favorite colors to match the room, or you can get the kids to create something special and heartfelt.

Repurpose!

Take ordinary items from your favorite big box store and then wrap it in something like a map or an optician’s chart. Broadway show playbills or posters can be glued – and then varnished – onto end tables to give them more depth and artistic value.  Corks and/or labels from wine bottles can also be incorporated into a frame to make a beautiful wine label collage.  Anything is possible when you repurpose!

Candles and Candlesticks

In addition to the warm light they give off when lit, the right cluster of candles melted together becomes an ever-changing sculpture. As time goes on, you can add more candles allowing you to watch your art change and evolve.

Ideas for Living Rooms

england-furniture-living-room-ideas
Does your living room need a bit of updating?  Are you seeing some inspired decorating tips? Your living room redecorating doesn’t have to be a major project. With a few simple tips, you can completely change the look of your space, but still recognize it as your own!

Lighting Changes Shapes and Space

Changing up your living room’s lighting scheme can do incredible things for a room. If you have a main source of lighting, such as a ceiling lamp or row of track lighting, consider either replacing them with, or adding to them some floor and/or table lamps. Simply changing these focal spots of illuminations and shadows can make your room feel fresh and new.  It’s really a simple step with big results.

If you have track lighting, changing the position can also dramatically change the shape of the room and also create new focal points such as on a particular wall or a fireplace.

Make a Memory Wall

A good focal point of a living room is a wall dedicated to photos of family, friends, and mementos such as those “first drawings” by your children, or ribbons from school events.

A Book A Day

A recessed bookshelf as part of – or entirely using – one wall is like art in and of itself. Some homes come with recessed bookshelves, but it’s not difficult to construct your own. The wall can be a complete recessed shelf, or you could do staggering and protruding shelves up a wall which provides a more modern touch.

For classic living room design, use lots of books of all types to give a ‘cozy conservatory’ type of feeling, or use a few large hardbound books for a more contemporary feel.

Whichever design style you choose, make sure it’s yours. There are many styles available, and it’s up to you to choose just the right touches to make your living room into a true sanctuary, for your mind and your body.
